Can Gambling Revenues Substitute for Property Taxes in Florida???

I smell a substitute source for Property Tax RevenuesIts time to write to Governor Charlie Crist! And your State Legislators!

The Seminole Indian Tribe wants to expand gambling at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa and five other Florida Casinos, to add Class III gaming, where players compete against each other, in games such as Roulette and Blackjack.

The Good News:

If Florida reaches an agreement with the Tribe, it has the opportunity to receive a percentage of the tribes revenue, or a “per-machine fee”, in exchange for granting exclusive rights for certain types of gambling. EUREKA!

That sounds like a tremendous source of revenue, that could substitute for the current property tax revenues that are coming from our overtaxed homeowners!

The Bad News:

If Florida fails to reach an agreement with the Tribe, the federal government will enforce rules to allow the change in gambling and the State of Florida would receive NOTHING!

**An agreement must be reached my mid-August, so contact the Governor and Legislature today!**

BlackjackThe recently-passed tax proposal is not likely to pass with the required 60% of the Florida voters at the election in January. I have yet to hear anyone say they are voting for it, but plenty of people are committed to voting against it!

Floridians need to be pro-active with our Legislature and our Governor to keep pressing for a better plan to lower, or eliminate, our property taxes and hold our local governments accountable for their overspending of the past 5 years.

Let your voice be heard, or dont complain when you dont like the result on January 29, 2008.

I think that everyone should vote against it. If the tribe loses, they will probably withdrew their support of FSU, and the school will be forced by the NCAA to change its mascot – or eliminate its football program entirely. All invovled would be better off if FSU concentrated more on scholarship.

    A concerned reader.

  2. Jeff Long says:

legalized gambling vs illegal mascot. Having been a Seminole, graduating from FSU, the ‘nole mascot is an icon, not a belitlement to the indian nation… but I guess if a dolphins or gators or pegases’ could voice their opinion, they too would say how in humane it is to make them as a symbol of higher education.
