Hyde Park…Historic Homes in Tampa’s First Neighborhood

The Latest News on the Tampa Real Estate Market and Tampa Neighborhoods…

Another article in my Historic Tampa series.

Hyde Park is a designated historic district and Tampas first neighborhood! Founded when O.H. Platt bought the property in the late 1800s, it was named after his favorite city in Illinois.

Bordered by the Hillsborough River, many affluent citizens built large homes in a range of architectural styles on beautiful oak-lined streets. Located just minutes from downtown, Hyde Park is one of Tampas most sought-after neighborhoods. Many of the homes are still named for the famous residents who lived there.

MaashouseThe Maas house, at 907 Bayshore, built in 1924, on the left, is one of the most historic homes on Bayshore Boulevard. It was designed for the founders of Maas Brothers Department Store, one of Floridas largest chains.

The blue design located under the eaves was the Maas Brothers logo and it adorned the department store shopping bags!

The waterfront home has been totally renovated.

Newport Avenue is home to several of the most historic homes in town. The Leiman House, built in 1916, for Cigar Box Magnate Henry Leiman, is one of the most well-known in Hyde Park for its Prairie Style.

Recently purchased by a neighbor, it is undergoing an extensive renovation and addition.

The William Himes House, right, at 801 Delaware is a 3 story Greek Revival on801del over 1/2 acre.

The elegant home has eight bedrooms, seven fireplaces and a ballroom on the third floor, along with a guest house. It was recently renovated and it was listed for 3.95 Million.

Homes in Hyde Park range in price from the 500′s to several million.

    I was told there is a Frank Lloyd Wrigth home somewhere is Hyde Park. Is that true ?

    Jeff:

    I have heard that the Leiman house was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, but not Wright himself. I’ll have to check to see if I can find more.

    Many years ago I lived in Temple Terrace off 56th on W River Dr. There was a house on the left near where the river makes a U turn that I was told was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It looks like his style and era but could be copy or desiged by a student of his.
