Plant High School Rowing Team Takes “The Best” from The State… to National Regatta Finals

Plant High Rowing AssociationH.B. Plant High School ranks 38th in the “Top 100 High Schools in the US”. Known for it’s Academic Achievers, and consistently rated on the “Best Schools” list, this year the Plant High Rowing Association has plenty to brag about, as well.

In the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association Sweeps, Plant High Rowing Association had it’s best showing in history, placing Third in Overall Points Statewide…Six Boats, and 58 members of the Plant High Rowing Assocation, qualified for the SRAA National Championships Regatta in Camden, New Jersey, to be held May 25 and May 26. This is a well-deserved honor for these athletes who train six days each week, on the water, rain or shine!

Here is the line-up for the outstanding athletes from Plant High School, who will be heading to the National Finals.

Boca Kitchen Bar Is “Smokin”…New Restaurant Opens in Hyde Park

I have been driving past Boca for several weeks, in the old “Smoke” space on Platt St.   Happy to see “Smoke” evaporate(you can find that review here, too), I was looking forward to a new look, AND, a much better menu.
I made reservations for lunch, and was joined by my favorite “foodie” friend, which is always an epicurean adventure of multiple courses! Thankfully, they have enclosed the outdoor patio, so the space itself is much roomier AND air conditioned. We were promptly greeted by Erika, who, truly, ranks among the “rock stars” of wait staff. She was beyond attentive and, by the time we got to dessert, I think she was “reading our minds”. More on that later…
We decided to share one of the Flatbreads as a first course, and my friend wanted one with the Burrata Cheese, so we ordered the So-Cal…Spicy Tomato Jam, Tomato, Burrata Cheese and Basil Pesto. The toppings were absolutely the freshest, but the crust was a little tough and it needed some salt. No salt, or pepper, on the table, is one of my pet peeves, but Erika promptly brought us some fresh sea salt and pepper. ** Note to all restaurants**…please put salt and pepper on the table!
Our Entrees were the Steak & Egg Salad, and one of the day’s specials, an Oyster PoBoy with Homemade Chips.
I like my steak to “moo” and my eggs to “cheep”, or they are too well done. I am very specific when I place an order and the kitchen delivered the dish perfectly…Grilled Flank Steak, Grilled Radiccio and Frisee Greens with a fresh fried egg and a blue cheese crumble vinaigrette, all done with the appropriate “rareness”. It was fabulous…and HUGE!


Not a fan of Oysters, I had to trust my friend when she showered praise on her PoBoy, especially the house-baked Ciabbata bread and fresh horseradish on the side. Now, really full, but what’s a food review without dessert, right? In deciding to “share”, we were discussing our options in front of Erika and had narrowed it to Hot Chocolate Truffle “Bon Bons” with Strawberry Fields Cream or The Homage to Ybor…a red apple cobbler with dolce de Leche Ice Cream, Nutella Ganache and smoke Coconut Crumb. We never actually “told” Erika what our choice was, but she overheard me discuss my aversion to Strawberry(and only Strawberry) Ice Cream and placed our order for the Homage to Ybor. Great service!
Upon exiting, we were greeted by the chef, Chad McColgin, who took our “flatbread” critique very well and we chatted about our enjoyable dining experience. We left with a basket of assorted, locally grown tomatoes, as Boca Kitchen Bar is also a “market” for some local produce and unique products made in-house.
I can’t wait to head back to Boca for dinner!

Moving to Tampa? PCS to MacDill Air Force Base?  Looking for expert advice in the Tampa Real Estate Market?

When you are buying a home in the Tampa Real Estate market, or anywhere in the World, you should NEVER fail to get a Home Inspection done to check for any structural, or mechanical, defects in the home you are buying. With the number of “foreclosures” on the market being sold “as is”, it is VERY important that you have any home you are intending to buy inspected by a PROFESSIONAL Home Inspector.

Very often, buyers are trying to save money by having a “friend” who claims to be a contractor do the inspection. BAD IDEA. Home Inspectors are certified through ASHI, a professional association of Home Inspectors. They have specialized training, standards to uphold and checklists they can follow, eliminating the likelihood that they might “miss” something. While no inspector is perfect, the more training the inspector has, the more thorough he is likely to be in examining the home for any possible defects, especially those not visible to the untrained eye.

Occasionally, you will need to hire additional inspectors, depending on the home. A waterfront home generally will require a seawall inspection, or a dock inspection. Property in a rural area may warrant a septic inspection or well inspection.

Wood-burning fireplaces should really be inspected for any loose mortar, or creosote build-up. I recommend a local chimney sweep for those inspections. Radon inspections are common in many areas East of Tampa and that requires a cannister to be placed in the home for several days, then collected, and tested, for the presence of Radon Gas.

While the cost of inspections is not inexpensive, the cost of NOT uncovering a problem until after you are the homeowner can be HUGE. Ask your Real Estate Professional for the best inspectors, not the cheapest ones!

Best Places to Live in Tampa? Best Neighborhoods in Tampa?  For families who are relocating to Tampa, or a PCS to MacDill Air Force Base, it is ALWAYS about the school district.

I have been relocating families, to Tampa, the Tampa Suburbs and MacDill Air Force Base for over 17 years. I KNOW the schools.  Hillsborough County has some of the best schools in the US, including Plant High School, which ranks at 38, in the top 500 High Schools in the country.

What is the BEST neighborhood? That is different for every family, and every price range. The Tampa area has many different areas at all price ranges, from city living in South Tampa and the Plant High School District, to the northern reaches of the county. The Best Schools in Tampa Are Some of the Best Schools in the US!

Tampa Schools Received National Recognition, once again! In the Washington Post’s High School Challenge, High Schools across the United States were “ranked” using the following criteria: The number of Advanced Placement Classes, International Baccalaureate Classes and College Level Tests a school had given in 2010 was divided by the number of graduating seniors.

This method insures that the size of the student body did not influence the rankings.

 

H. B. Plant High School, Tampa

The Tampa School District is a “Countywide” District.  Hillsborough County Schools  have plenty to brag about! Ten of the Hillsborough County High Schools made the “Top 500″ High School List and Three of the top 100 High Schools in the US  are in the Hillsborough County School District.  Once Again, H.B. Plant High school, with a U.S. ranking of 38th “Best High School in the US”,  is the only non-IB school of  the top three schools in the District.

Moving To Tampa? Where Are The Best Tampa Neighborhoods for Large Homesites? Lutz!

When clients are moving to Tampa and ask me about the best neighborhoods in Tampa, where they can have some “acreage”,  instead of the standard “less than 1/4 acre” homesite, I recommend Lutz, as one of their options. Pronounced “loots”, Lutz is located in Northwestern Hillsborough County,  just north of Tampa.  With top-rated schools and many neighborhoods with larger homesites, buyers can have a little more privacy from their neighbors!

This home is located on more than one acre, in a neighborhood in Lutz. With 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, 3600 square feet  and a pool in a gated community, in the Freedom High School District,  this is a home is a “steal” at the short sale price of $445,000.

Newer homes in Lutz can vary in price from the $300,000′s to several million.

If you are moving to Tampa and looking for a home, and a neighborhood, that offers a “low maintenance” lifestyle in the heart of the city, Harbour Island may be for you! Located in the Plant High School District, it is the MOST desirable school district in the County. Rated in the “Top 100 High Schools in the U.S.”, families with children and busy professionals enjoy the lifestyle and the resale value of the Plant High District and  Harbour Island.

I have two homes under contract on Harbour Island, for two families with children of all ages,  who were looking for GREAT Schools, a safe neighborhood, and being close to all of the wonderful things to do in Tampa, especially close to Downtown Tampa and Hyde Hyde Park. When families, with children, are looking for the combination of “family friendly” neighborhoods and “good schools”, they must make a choice between South Tampa and it’s many neighborhoods, including Harbour Island, or one of the many suburbs outside of the City of Tampa.  It is confusing at best! Here’s the scoop on Harbour Island….just south of Downtown Tampa, it is in the Gorrie Elementary, Wilson Middle and Plant High School District…

On the waterfront, just blocks from downtown Tampa, Harbour Island offers the combination of prestige, convenience, 24 -hour security in a gated environment, and a comfortable lifestyle, in a variety of neighborhoods. You can walk to Jackson’s Bistro for dining on the Terrace, or over to the Channelside area for dining, movies or shopping. The Harbour Island Athletic Club has a pool, tennis, spa and the ultimate workout facilities. The St. Pete Times Forum, home to The Tampa Bay Lightning, is just a short walk from home. Harbour Court and Seddon Cove feature condominiums with city, or waterviews, with prices starting in the 200’s . Townhomes are available in several neighborhoods, ranging from the 300’s to the 600’s in Harbour Bay. The Keys is a “Key West” style neighborhood with single family home prices  from the 500’s. Villas dominate Port Royal and St. Tropez, with non-waterfront starting in the 700’s and waterfront prices over 1 million. Single Family Homes  are available from 800K and up! The quiet streets are filled with kids (and parents) biking through the neighborhoods.
